Bolzano (262 m asl), with 106,951 inhabitants, is the capital of the autonomous province of the same name in Trentino-Alto Adige and is located in a valley in the middle of hills full of vineyards. It is the gateway to the Dolomites mountain range in the Italian Alps. In the medieval city center, the South Tyrolean Archaeological Museum houses the Neolithic mummy, known as Ötzi, the man of the Similaun. Nearby are the imposing thirteenth-century Castel Mareccio and the Cathedral of Bolzano characterized by Gothic-Romanesque architecture.
